Wallpapered Tales

Art in the City ~ Saturday 14th August 2010

Wild Orchid Theatre performed Wallpapered Tales in a shop on a busy shopping street in Derby, entertaining audiences with its varied collection of plays, poetry, short stories and monologues. It is the result of a collaboration between Wild Orchid Theatre and local artist Diana Shepherd, as part of Derby City Council's "Art in the City" project of exhibiting art in empty shops.

During her artist residency at 44 Sadler Gate, Diana drew the different locations between her two studios (Arboretum Park, Derby and Charles Abbey Workshops, Long Eaton) on long reams of paper stretching from one end of the shop to the other. On the opposite wall visitors were encouraged to draw their own sketches.

Catherine Roth from Wild Orchid Theatre was inspired both by Diana's artwork as well as the venue and thought it a fantastic space to bring live theatre to. Not only did it offer a great performance space, it was also in the heart of a vibrant city centre.

Committed to dramatising exciting new writing, Wild Orchid organised a competition to find site specific work to stage. Writers, inspired by Diana's art, in turn created their own - albeit through words rather than drawings. The project culminated with two script in hand performances ofWallpaper Tales on Saturday 14th August 2010 featuring winning entries from Wild Orchid's writing competition.

Wild Orchid Theatre is very grateful for the funding it received from Derby City Council for this project.
